From birth, start washing your baby’s gums with a soft, clean washcloth after feeding to clear away oral bacteria. Once a tooth emerges, begin careful use of infant toothbrushes and baby-safe toothpaste in tiny amounts (grain of rice-sized under the age of two, pea-sized for ages two through five). Once two or more teeth touch, careful flossing should become part of your little one’s daily oral hygiene routine.

Even with dedicated brushing and flossing, there may be places that your child’s toothbrush can’t go. If Dr. Bo and Dr. Christina recommend sealants, it is usually when first molars form (about age six) or permanent molars appear (around age twelve). Sealants decrease the likelihood of cavity development and last an average of about three years.
